In this talk, we present a review of the loop-tree duality theorem (LTD) and its applications to the computation of physical observables. Since it allows to rewrite virtual amplitudes in terms of real phase-space integrals, an integrand level cancellation of both infrared and ultraviolet singularities can be achieved. Moreover, this cancellation turns out to be fully local, thus prescinding of any regularisation method (for instance, DREG). Some explicit examples are discussed, emphasising in the application to the computation of the physical process $\gamma \to q \bar{q}$ at NLO in QCD.
